Joint Commission to develop certification program for US organ transplant centers to meet CMS rules.
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid's (CMS) final rule for US transplant centers to perform organ transplants still a long way from being finalized; however, the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations plans launch a Certification Program for Organ Transplant Centers
in 2006 to prepare them to meet the new requirements.
"The Joint Commission is not a regulatory body but we are often used as one to help hospitals meet Medicare and Medicaid requirements. CMS is proposing an expansion of the conditions of participation for the nation's 257 transplant programs and we saw it as a natural extension of our current deeming authority," Chuck Mowll, the Joint Commission's executive vice president for Business Development, Government and External Relations, told Transplant News.
