A family's hope
Amy Bays pulled a hand-painted jar from her purse and set it on a long table in the chambers of Vanderburgh Circuit Court Judge Carl Heldt.
Her eyes were pleading. Her heart was pounding. Inside the jar were the ashes of her daughter.
"She was only 3," she said, her raised voice trembling as she looked from the defense attorney to the judge. "She'll never go to prom. She'll never have a first kiss or a first date. She should be 10 right now, and talking on the phone 24 hours a day with her friends."
